A young man longs to see his love.
But she was too busy working to even talk, much less, see him.
He frantically texted her, telling her how much he loved her and that he really wanted to talk.
That was when she got upset with him, telling him that she couldn’t afford to talk to him as she was too busy working on her paper, and thus could not even spare a minute.
“I love you so much,” her boyfriend told her via texting. “I’ll always be here for you. We’re coming closer to a time where we’ll always be together. I really love you so much; I would like spend some time with you. I miss you already…”
But the girlfriend was still upset. “Why is it so hard for you to understand how busy I am? Can’t you wait?” she messaged him, almost shouting back at him via the texting. “It’s not like we won’t see each other tomorrow. You’re overreacting. Just go to sleep! I need to get back to work on my paper.”
“I’m sorry for bothering you, my love…” the boyfriend replied. “I love you… Good night. Always take care of yourself. And remember that I will always be there to guide you.”
And so, the boy went to bed.
The next day, the girl came to her senses.
She reached for her phone to apologize. “I’m sorry,” she said.
“I was just really busy; I’m sorry I got upset. Please have breakfast; I need to head off soon.”
She texted him later—he hadn’t answered—reminding him that he needed to go to class.
And then again, at lunch, she texted him once more: “It’s already lunchtime. Why weren’t you in class? Do you have money for your phone. Please text me back.”
She received a message from him. “He’s already left us…. Our son is already gone.” It wasn’t her boyfriend, but his mother. “He’s gone. Didn’t he tell you he was really sick?”
The mother went on to confess that the boyfriend did not have much time left on Earth; he had been sick for a while, and hadn’t told his girlfriend because he didn’t want to keep her worried during the busiest period of her life.
“No one can predict how long someone will live,” the mother told the girlfriend. “We tried to wake him up, but he was already gone. He left a message for you, though.”
The girl read the message. “Always take care of yourself,” her boyfriend had written to her. “I’m always here for you. I don’t know if I’ll wake up tomorrow, but I hope I do, so I can spend the rest of my life with you. I didn’t want to add to your stress by distracting you from your thesis, since you needed to get through this, please… be strong for me. I’ll always be here, by your side, even if I’m not around anymore to tell you how much I love you. I love you so much, and always will.”
People tend to not treasure something until it was already taken away from them. Treasure your loved ones when they are still around for we might not know if we might have another day. Each new day is a gift and that is why we call it ‘the present’.
